This beautiful mammoth ivory double fish is carved from the tip of the mammoth ivory tusk.  The carved leaf give the impression of wrapping round itself.  On top of the leaf a two carved raised fish - all carved from this single piece of mammoth ivory,  The carving is exquisite and the piece is signed on the back by the artist who carved it.  I have beaded it with beautiful golden sheen moonstone 13mm beads that have a shimmer to them.  The necklace is finished with a large 18k gold vermeil clasp.

The fish is symbolic of abundance, prosperity, wealth and persistence.  It is also believed to represent an advantage in business.  A pair of fish symbolizes a happy marriage.

Moonstone belongs to the large mineral family of feldspars. It is an opalescent stone.  The Romans who believed that the stone was formed from the light of the moon used moonstone in jewelry.  Moonstone is considered a sacred stone in India.  In early times, it was believed that one could see the future if the stone was held in the mouth during a full moon.

Mammoth Ivory comes from the extinct mammoth elephant that roamed the Earth during the Pliocene era from around 4.8 million to 4,500 years ago. Because they are extinct they are not endangered and therefore, are legal and save the African elephant.  The artisans that carved elephant ivory are now carving mammoth ivory that is recovered in Siberia.
