2012 is the Year of the Dragon, specifically the black water dragon.  The year of the dragon occurs once every twelve years.  The water dragon occurs once every 60 years.  It arrived on February 4, 2012, was celebrated January 23, 2012 and ends on February 9, 2013.   

The dragon is a supernatural creature and is the symbol of power, strength, wisdom and goodness.  It represents the utmost in accomplishment: good luck and a successful life. The dragon is also believed to represent growth and change

It is tradition that decoration depicting a five-clawed dragon was for imperial use only. Four claws indicate a prince, and three or less an official.  

This year is believed to be a year of success and good luck.  However, since the dragon is unpredictable there is a possibility of the unexpected happening this year.

It is also believed to be a good year for fashion as the dragon is dramatic and flamboyant.

Those born in the year of the dragon (1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012) are believed to be generous, charismatic, enthusiastic, energetic, confident and ambitious.  They like to be surrounded by friends.  They are intelligent, creative and have leadership qualities.  They are usually successful.
